I need to replace myself as Integrator so I can step fully into the Visionary seat, but my current leadership team does not respect the internal candidate I want to promote. Do I force the promotion and let them work through it, or search externally?
Forcing a promotion when the leadership team lacks respect for the candidate is a dangerous move that can instantly destroy your team health. The Integrator seat is the glue that holds the entire leadership team together, and if the team does not trust or respect the person in that seat, your execution will grind to a halt.
Before making a decision, you must objectively evaluate why the team resists this candidate. Is it a genuine GWC™ issue, or is it simply a matter of peer jealousy and legacy politics? Use the GWC™ tool to assess if the candidate has the capacity to lead, manage, and hold this specific team accountable.
If the candidate truly GWCs the seat but the team is simply resisting change, you must have honest, individual conversations with each leader. Explain your reasoning and set clear expectations for collaboration.
However, if there are valid doubts about the candidate's leadership or management capability, promoting them will only lead to failure. In this case, you must search externally. Bringing in an outside leader who has the experience and authority to run the team objectively is often the best way to transition your seat, protect your team health, and prepare the business for a clean, valuable exit.
