Our head of product and head of marketing are in a cold war, with product claiming marketing does not understand the technology and marketing claiming product builds features nobody wants. How do we use the EOS framework to break this siloed gridlock?
A cold war between product and marketing is a classic symptom of siloed departments operating without shared goals. When your leaders isolate in their respective corners and hurl criticisms at each other, they destroy trust, slow down your product delivery, and hurt your market position. You must use your operating system to force them into alignment and break the gridlock.
To resolve this conflict, you must move the conversation away from personal opinions and ground it in your Accountability Chart and your weekly Level 10 Meeting. They must realize that their individual success is completely dependent on their collective output.
Take these concrete steps to break the siloed gridlock:
- Review their seats on the Accountability Chart to ensure there are no overlapping responsibilities or gaps in communication channels.
- Establish a shared, cross functional KPI on your weekly scorecard that both leaders are mutually responsible for hitting, such as product adoption rate or customer acquisition cost.
- Have them co author a single, joint Rock for the upcoming quarter that requires them to collaborate on a customer feedback loop before any new development begins.
- Force them to use the IDS process during your weekly meetings to openly debate their differences in front of the entire leadership team, exposing silent resistance to the light of day.
By forcing this level of structured collaboration, you eliminate the passive aggressive behavior and establish an environment of shared vulnerability. When both leaders are held accountable to the same numbers and must solve their issues together in your weekly meeting, they will naturally begin to communicate. This collaborative alignment is essential to building a cohesive team that can run a highly profitable, scalable operation.
