We are preparing for a clean exit in two years, and we want to start using our weekly Level 10 Meeting to aggressively identify and eliminate operational dependencies on the owner, but these items never seem to make it to the top of our IDS list. How do we structure our weekly issues prioritization to systematically tackle owner dependency?
Preparing for a clean exit requires a systematic focus on eliminating owner dependency. If these strategic issues are constantly bypassed during your weekly Level 10 Meeting in favor of short-term fires, you are damaging your future valuation.
To solve this, you must consciously elevate exit readiness on your Issues List. During the prioritization phase of IDS, the leadership team must ask themselves which issues directly impact the transferability and long-term value of the business.
The Integrator must actively guide this process. If an issue regarding undocumented tribal knowledge, key customer concentration, or owner-dependent processes is on the list, it should be prioritized as one of the top three issues to solve.
You can also dedicate a specific portion of your issues log to exit-focused priorities. Ensure these items are clearly marked so the team cannot ignore them.
When you make owner independence a recurring focus during your weekly IDS sessions, you build a self-sustaining operation. This not only makes the business highly attractive to buyers but also ensures a smooth transition when you finally decide to exit.
