We are preparing the business for a clean exit in three years, but when we IDS during our weekly Level 10 Meeting, our immediate operational emergencies always push our exit-readiness issues to the bottom of the pile. How do we ensure we actually solve our long-term exit and valuation issues without ignoring our daily fires?
When preparing for an ownership transition, exit readiness is not a side project; it is a core business priority. If you let daily operational fires consume your weekly pulse, you will arrive at your exit date with a business that is difficult to sell or undervalued.
To prevent this, you must intentionally prioritize exit-related issues during the IDS® portion of your Level 10 Meeting™. When selecting your top three issues for the week, ensure at least one is dedicated to your exit readiness, such as documenting critical tribal knowledge, resolving key client dependencies, or cleaning up historical financial records.
If daily emergencies consistently prevent you from reaching these issues, it is a sign that your leadership team is caught in the weeds. Use your Accountability Chart to delegate daily firefighting to middle managers. This frees up your executive team's capacity to focus on building transferable value and ensuring a clean exit.
