We are preparing our business for a future sale, but our leadership team consistently treats transferability and exit-readiness issues on our weekly list as low priority compared to daily customer fire drills. How do we force them to prioritize these exit tasks during IDS?
It is natural for a leadership team to focus on the immediate, burning issues of the day. A client complaint or a software bug feels urgent, while documenting processes or auditing contracts for transferability feels like something that can wait. But if you constantly prioritize the urgent over the important, you will never build a business that is ready for a clean exit.
To solve this, you must change how you prioritize during the IDS® portion of your Level 10 Meeting™. When you review the Issues List, the Integrator must ensure that exit-readiness issues are actively brought to the top.
Remind the team that value creation and owner-independence are core to the company's long-term success. If you have an exit-readiness Rock for the quarter, any issue that threatens that Rock must be treated with the same urgency as a lost client.
Use your V/TO® to maintain perspective. If your ultimate goal is a highly valuable, clean exit, then solving transferability issues is directly tied to your vision.
When prioritizing your top three issues for the week, make it a rule that at least one of those slots must be dedicated to an exit-readiness or systemic capacity issue. By forcing the team to solve these foundational problems weekly, you build the execution muscles needed for a successful transition.
