Our five-minute segue routinely stretches to fifteen or twenty minutes because leaders share long rambling stories or turn their personal and professional bests into detailed project updates. How do we rein in a runaway segue without killing team camaraderie?
The segue has one specific objective: transition every participant out of their daily operational whirlwind and into the room, creating human connection and shared presence before opening business. When the segue expands into a twenty-minute storytelling session, it steals critical time from IDS® and signals that the meeting lacks boundaries.
The Integrator must set explicit guardrails. At second zero, kick off the segue and state the prompt clearly: one personal best and one professional best, shared in sixty seconds or less per person.
To prevent project updates from masquerading as professional bests, clarify the definition. A professional best is a celebration of a win, a milestone achieved, or praise for a team member. It is not an operational status report, a client issue in disguise, or a summary of a current project. If a leader starts recounting the details of a contract negotiation or walking through next week calendar, interrupt them calmly. Remind them that the segue is a celebration, not a briefing, and ask for the headline win.
If a particular leader consistently rambles, introduce a visible physical or digital timer set to five minutes total for the entire room. When five minutes expire, the segue is over, regardless of who is speaking. Once leaders realize the clock is non-negotiable, they self-edit.
Camaraderie is not built by wasting executive time. It is built by vulnerability, clear structure, and mutual respect for the team meeting pulse.
