Tactical drift is the death of effective problem-solving. When your leadership team jumps straight to discussing minor execution details or debating how to do a task, they are avoiding the hard work of identifying the root cause of the problem. This results in band-aid fixes that do not prevent the issue from returning. To keep your team focused on true problem-solving, you must enforce the steps of IDS® with absolute discipline.

- Force the team to spend the majority of their time on the Identify step, refusing to move to Discuss until everyone agrees on the actual root cause.
- Appoint a facilitator to call out tactical drift the moment a leader starts discussing specific implementation steps or assigning micro-tasks.
- Write the core issue clearly on your screen or whiteboard so the team has a physical anchor to return to when the conversation begins to wander.
- Push tactical details down to the individual To-Do list, ensuring that the Level 10 Meeting™ is used to agree on the high-level solution, not to micromanage the execution.

Your job during IDS® is to find the permanent fix, not to plan every step of the project. If a conversation shifts to how to format a spreadsheet or who to email first, shut it down. Agree on the solution, assign the To-Do, and move to the next issue.
