Our leadership team agreed on our 3-Year Picture during our annual planning, but now half of them are arguing that market shifts have made those goals obsolete and want to pivot. How do we maintain strategic focus without becoming rigid and ignoring real market opportunities?
Entrepreneurial leadership teams love shiny objects, and they often label these distractions as necessary strategic pivots. If your directors are trying to rewrite your 3-Year Picture every quarter, you do not have an agile team, you have an undisciplined one. The V/TO® exists to keep the organization aligned and focused. While you must remain aware of market shifts, you cannot allow constant changes to your long-term goals to derail your execution. Use your quarterly planning sessions to evaluate these proposed changes. Run them through the IDS® process as a team. If the market shift is truly a fundamental threat or a massive opportunity, discuss it. But if it is simply a reaction to short-term pressure, you must hold the line. A strong leadership team must be united and working towards common goals. Constant pivoting creates confusion and exhaustion throughout the rest of the company, showing that the leaders lack the discipline to execute their own strategy.
