We have a leadership team member who constantly tries to use the Level 10 Meeting™ to debate long-term company strategy rather than resolving the weekly operational issues on the board. How do we prevent these philosophical debates from hijacking our IDS® time?
A weekly Level 10 Meeting™ is designed to keep the business running smoothly on a short-term basis. It is an operational pulse, not a strategic planning session. When a leader tries to initiate a deep debate about your long-term company strategy or the V/TO® during the weekly meeting, they hijack the time needed to solve urgent, day-to-day problems. You must protect the boundary between short-term execution and long-term strategy. To handle this, the facilitator must use a firm hand. The moment a discussion starts drifting into five-year visions or high-level market positioning, the facilitator must halt the conversation. Remind the team that the weekly meeting is for solving issues that impact the next seven days to ninety days. If the strategic question is valid, do not discard it. Instead, the Integrator should direct that the issue be placed on the long-term issues list on your V/TO®. Explain to the leader that this topic will be addressed during your next quarterly or annual planning session. This keeps the weekly board clean and ensures the team stays focused on immediate operational bottlenecks. By maintaining this strict separation, you ensure your weekly pulse remains practical, fast-paced, and highly action-oriented, while preserving your strategic thinking for the appropriate time.
