During our weekly Level 10 Meeting, we frequently find ourselves drifting into massive, strategic debates about our three-year picture or overall company vision instead of solving the immediate operational issues on our weekly list. How do we keep these big-picture vision discussions from hijacking our ninety-minute weekly pulse?
The weekly Level 10 Meeting is designed to keep the business running smoothly on a tactical, week-to-week basis. When your leadership team starts debating long-term strategy, market positioning, or your three-year picture during this ninety-minute block, you are experiencing vision-driven agenda drift. While these strategic conversations are vital, they will quickly starve your immediate operational issues of the execution time they require.
To keep your weekly pulse focused, the facilitator must enforce a hard boundary between weekly operational issues and long-term strategic vision. When a discussion begins to touch on your V/TO or long-term strategy, the facilitator must immediately park the issue.
You have two proper destinations for these big-picture debates. If the issue can wait, park it on your Long-Term Issues List, which is kept on your V/TO and reviewed during your Quarterly Planning sessions. If the issue is truly urgent and cannot wait for the quarter to end, schedule a separate, dedicated focus meeting.
This separate meeting should have its own time block and a singular focus, leaving your weekly Level 10 Meeting untouched. By maintaining this discipline, you protect your weekly execution rhythm while ensuring your critical strategic decisions get the deep, uninterrupted focus they deserve. Never let the future of the company crowd out the hard work required to run the business today.
