During the transition from personal to professional in our weekly segue, some of our leaders use their professional update to soft-launch highly controversial issues, effectively starting the meeting early and eating up our time. How do we stop this back-door agenda building?
The segue is a critical transition to clear the deck and get on the same page. It is not an early launch pad for operational debates. When a leader sneaks a massive strategic update or a looming crisis into their segue, they are trying to bypass the standard prioritization of the Issues List. This is a subtle form of manipulation that derails your Level 10 Meeting™ before it even starts.
You must establish a strict boundary for the segue. Good news means high-level personal and professional wins, not introductory pitches for complex issues. If a leader shares a win that has an underlying operational question, the facilitator must acknowledge the positive news but prevent any follow-up discussion.
If a leader attempts to soft-launch a problem, the Integrator must immediately intervene. Tell them to capture that topic on the weekly Issues List and move to the next person.
Keep the segue moving rapidly. It should take no more than five minutes for the entire team. By protecting this boundary, you preserve the psychological transition needed to enter the meeting focused, while keeping the agenda clean and structured.
