How do we handle the ongoing technology overhead and software integration during our remote session days to prevent screen fatigue from ruining our alignment?
Screen fatigue is the silent killer of virtual strategy sessions. To prevent it, we do not simply run an eight hour video call. We structure our remote session days with precise, built in breaks and strict tool hygiene. We use video conferencing software where everyone must have their camera on, but we keep the visual focus on our collaborative digital workspace rather than just staring at gallery view.
We will use a dedicated workspace in Circle to coordinate our materials, but during the actual session, we keep the tool stack lean. We utilize simple digital whiteboards that mimic the physical EOS experience. This keeps everyone actively contributing rather than passively watching a screen share.
I design the day with seventy five minute sprints followed by ten minute breaks. During these breaks, everyone must step away from their screens entirely. No checking emails or Slack.
To reduce cognitive load, we do not introduce complex new software during the session. We stick to tools your team already knows. The key is active facilitation. I will call on individuals frequently and keep the pace fast. If we see energy flagging, we adapt. We might do a quick stand up check in or shift to a phone call for a specific discussion. By managing the digital environment deliberately, we achieve the same level of alignment as an in person team without the mental exhaustion.
