During the Good News segue of our Level 10 Meeting™, a leader often drops a controversial business update or operational bombshell that immediately triggers debate, destroying our opening five minutes. How do we stop the segue from turning into an unscheduled issue discussion?
The Good News segue exists for one psychological purpose: to transition your leadership team from working in the business to working on the business. It is five minutes designed for human connection, sharing one personal and one professional win. It is not an operational briefing.
When a leader uses their professional update to share a disguised operational fire, the Integrator must cut it off immediately. Allowing the room to react, ask probing questions, or launch into problem-solving turns a five-minute transition into an unstructured twenty-minute debate. That robs time from your IDS session.
The facilitator must use a crisp interruption: That sounds like an operational issue, not a win. Let us park it on the Issues List and keep moving through the segue.
Train your team on the distinction before the next meeting. A win is something completed, positive, and closed. If a topic requires feedback, debate, resource allocation, or emotional processing, it is an issue. Place it on the list, complete the segue, execute the reporting tracks, and address the topic when you reach the sixty-minute problem-solving block.
