Our business development reps are hitting their weekly outbound call volume metrics perfectly, but our actual sales meeting count is flat. How do we redesign this Scorecard metric to prevent gaming and ensure high-value outreach?
When people are measured solely on volume, they will optimize for volume, even if it produces zero business results. Tracking raw outbound calls is a classic example of a metric that is easy to game. Your team can dial low-quality leads or leave hundreds of quick voicemails just to keep their Scorecard green.
To fix this, you must pair your activity metric with a quality metric. Instead of tracking total outbound calls alone, add a metric for qualification conversations or actual connections. This measures the number of calls where a meaningful discussion occurred with a decision-maker.
Next, track the conversion rate of those connections to scheduled meetings. If your outbound calls are high but your connections and scheduled meetings are flat, your team is targeting the wrong people or using an ineffective script.
The sales leader on your Accountability Chart must own this outcome. In your next Level 10 Meeting, bring this issue to the table and use the IDS process to analyze the root cause. Redesign your Scorecard to measure quality touchpoints rather than raw dials. This shift forces your team to focus on high-value conversations that actually move prospects through your pipeline and drive revenue.
