Our employees are using the five bulleted roles on our Accountability Chart as an excuse to refuse extra tasks, claiming that anything not explicitly written on the chart is not their job. How do we prevent our team from weaponizing the Accountability Chart to dodge daily operational needs?
The five bulleted roles on the Accountability Chart are designed to define major areas of ownership and accountability, not to serve as an exhaustive list of daily tasks. When employees weaponize the chart to dodge work, you have a core values and culture issue.
First, hold a company-wide meeting to clarify the purpose of the Accountability Chart. Explain that the chart defines who is ultimately responsible for the outcomes of each seat. It is not a rigid job description that limits what an employee can do.
Next, reinforce your core values, especially those centered on teamwork and doing what is necessary to help the company succeed. If an employee refuses a reasonable task because it is not on their chart, they are failing to exhibit a help first mindset. This is a core value alignment issue, not a structural one.
To resolve this, ensure every seat holder understands that their ultimate responsibility is to help their team achieve its weekly Rocks and Scorecard measurables. If temporary tasks arise that do not fit neatly into any seat, the Integrator must assign them as short-term priorities.
If an employee continues to use the Accountability Chart as a shield to avoid work, you have a right-person-wrong-seat issue. Address this behavior directly during your quarterly check-ins.
