We are prepping our business for a clean exit in twenty-four months, and I want to demonstrate to potential buyers that our leadership team runs our Level 10 Meetings™ with absolute independence. How do I, as the departing owner, transition from active observer to fully absent without the meeting discipline collapsing?
If your leadership team cannot run a flawless Level 10 Meeting™ without you, your business is unsellable. To prepare for a clean exit, you must transition your team to a state of total operational independence. This requires a deliberate shift from a leader-follower dynamic to a leader-leader model, as advocated by David Marquet.
Start by stepping back from all active facilitation. Your Integrator must own the meeting pulse completely. As the owner, your new role during the weekly meeting is to observe and listen. Sit in the meeting, but do not speak unless you are directly asked for input or need to report your own Scorecard metrics or Rocks.
You must allow your team to make decisions and even experience minor failures during the IDS® portion. If you step in to solve every problem, you stunt their growth and reinforce their dependency on you. Use the Accountability Chart to remind everyone of their defined roles and responsibilities.
Over a period of three to six months, gradually reduce your attendance from weekly to bi-weekly, and eventually to once a month. When potential buyers perform due diligence, they will look at your meeting archives and team dynamics. Seeing a leadership team that operates with absolute discipline without the owner in the room is the ultimate proof of a valuable, self-sustaining asset.
