We are preparing for an acquisition in eighteen months, but potential buyers will discount our valuation if our leadership team depends on my daily direction. What specific steps must our leadership team take to demonstrate enterprise independence before we go to market?
Buyers do not pay top dollar for a brilliant founder with a group of executive assistants. They pay for a self-operating business powered by a functional, cohesive leadership team that can execute the Vision/Traction Organizer® (V/TO®) without the founder in the building.
To build that enterprise independence over the next eighteen months, implement three non-negotiable operational shifts:
- Remove yourself from the center of weekly execution. Hand over the facilitation of the Level 10 Meeting to your Integrator or another executive. Stop answering tactical questions; when a leader asks what to do, turn it back on them and ask what they recommend based on their seat accountabilities.
- Make your quarterly Rocks completely autonomous. Every Rock for the next four quarters must be planned, budgeted, and completed by your leadership team members without your direct involvement in the work.
- Step away from the business completely for thirty consecutive days. Do not answer emails, attend offsites, or check metrics. Force your leadership team to handle real disruptions and client escalations independently.
When prospective buyers conduct management interviews and review the operational data, they must see a team that drives the Scorecard and owns the strategy. That demonstrated independence removes key person risk and protects your transaction value.
