During the sale process, the buyer will interview our department heads without me in the room. How do we prepare our leadership team for these intense management presentations so they confidently project operational competence?
Management presentations are where deals are won or lost. If your department heads look hesitant, disagree on key metrics, or point to you for every answer, the buyer will assume the business cannot function without your daily oversight.
To prepare your team, start by aligning them on your EOS® tools. They must know your V/TO® inside and out, specifically your core values, your niche, and your three-year picture. When a buyer asks about the future, your team must deliver a unified message that matches your growth projections.
Conduct mock interviews with your leadership team on your exit runway. Hire your investment banker or an outside consultant to play the role of an aggressive private equity buyer. Ask your team hard questions about their specific seats on the Accountability Chart: how they manage their Scorecard metrics, how they use IDS® to solve operational issues, and how they scale their departments without adding linear headcount.
Teach your leaders to own their numbers. The operations director must speak fluently about capacity, the sales director must defend the pipeline conversion rates, and the finance leader must explain margin fluctuations. When your team answers confidently and references repeatable systems, the buyer will see a highly capable management team, making them comfortable paying a premium for your business.
