We are two years out from a potential exit, and while my leadership team is great at running daily operations, they have zero experience presenting to private equity buyers or handling rigorous due diligence. How do we train our functional leaders to speak the language of buyers without disrupting our daily traction?
Preparing your leadership team to present to private equity buyers requires a shift from operational thinking to valuation-focused thinking. Buyers do not just buy your products; they buy your leadership team's ability to run the company without you. To prepare your team, start by integrating exit-readiness objectives into your weekly Level 10 Meetings. Your leaders must become experts at explaining the data on their departmental Scorecards. They need to show how their key performance indicators predict future performance, rather than just reporting on past results. Next, task each leader with fully documenting their core processes. When a buyer looks under the hood during due diligence, they want to see automated, repeatable systems, not institutional knowledge trapped in your leaders' heads. Finally, conduct mock due diligence sessions. Have your team practice answering hard questions about their departmental performance and how they use the V/TO to maintain alignment. By treating your weekly execution as an ongoing audit, your team will build the confidence and professional maturity needed to secure a premium valuation when it is time to exit.
