I have spent twenty years building this company and it is my entire identity. How do I prepare myself mentally for life after the sale so I do not end up with seller regret?
Seller regret is a very real hazard for founders who sell their business without a plan for what comes next. When you exit, you do not just lose a job, you lose your daily routine, your social circle, and your sense of purpose. To prevent this, you must proactively manage your own transition before the deal closes. This starts with recognizing your conative drives and how you naturally take action. If you are a high driver who thrives on solving problems and building things, you cannot simply go sit on a beach. You will get bored and restless within weeks. You need to find what we call white space. This is unscheduled, open time to breathe, think, and explore new interests without immediate pressure. Use the strategic pause concept to deliberately step back and recuperate before jumping into your next venture. You must also separate your personal identity from the identity of the business. Ask yourself what your goals are outside of work, what plans you want to commit to, and how you want to deploy your energy. Whether it is angel investing, mentoring, or starting a completely new project, you must design your next chapter with the same intentionality you used to build your company.
