I am preparing to bring in our first professional, outside C-level executive to run operations, but I am terrified that my own tendency to micromanage will sabotage them. How do I prepare myself and the business to actually let go of the vine?

The fear of letting go of the vine is the number one reason entrepreneurial companies stall out. If you hire a high-level executive and then hover over their shoulder, you will waste a massive amount of capital and drive away the talent you desperately need.

To prepare for this transition, you must first define the new seat clearly on your Accountability Chart. This seat must have clear, measurable roles that are completely distinct from yours. If you are the Visionary, your job is big-picture ideas, culture, and key relationships. Their job as the Integrator or Chief Operating Officer is execution, managing the daily operations, and hitting the numbers.

Next, you must commit to the Level 10 Meeting rhythm. This is your primary mechanism for staying informed without micromanaging. Trust the weekly numbers on your Scorecard and the progress of their Rocks to tell you if they are succeeding. If the numbers are green and their Rocks are on track, you must stay out of their way.

Finally, you must mentally prepare for the fact that they will do things differently than you would. Different is not necessarily wrong. Focus strictly on the results, not the exact path they took to get there. If you cannot respect their authority to run their department, do not make the hire. You are not ready, and you will only create organizational chaos.
