I am terrified of feeling lost after I sell my business. How can I prepare myself mentally for life after the transaction?
This is a common struggle for founders because their identity is completely wrapped up in their business. To prepare, you must intentionally carve out white space, as described in Juliet Funt's work. White space is unscheduled time with no assignment. You need to practice taking strategic pauses long before the deal closes. Use these pauses to disconnect from daily operations, allowing your brain to reboot and reflect on your personal goals. Assess your own conative drivers. If you are a high Quick Start, you will need new, low-risk outlets for your entrepreneurial energy after the exit so you do not drive your family crazy or make reckless investments. Remember that your leadership team will be running the EOS® process without you. If you have done your job, the business will thrive in your absence. Your goal is to transition from active operator to trusted advisor or investor. Prepare a personal life plan that outlines what you want to learn, where you want to travel, or how you want to advise other founders. Start testing these activities now by taking longer vacations to see if your business truly runs smoothly while you are gone. This gives you the confidence that your legacy is secure and your next chapter has purpose.
