I want to introduce machine learning to automate some of our back-office processes, but my leadership team is highly skeptical and worries about tech debt. How do I pitch this project to gain their alignment without triggering their fear of technology?
Never sell AI to your leadership team. When you talk about machine learning, algorithms, or artificial intelligence, you trigger fear of failed IT projects and expensive tech debt. Instead, pitch operational improvements that machine learning will enable. Mention machine learning only as a footnote in your proposal.
Refrain from calling your initiatives ML projects. Instead, frame them as operations-improvement projects that use machine learning. For example, if you want to automate invoice processing, do not pitch an AI data extraction system. Pitch a project to reduce invoice processing time from five days to five minutes. Show your team how this change will free your billing coordinator from low-value data entry. This allows them to focus on collections and cash flow.
When you present the project for your V/TO or as a quarterly Rock, focus entirely on the business outcomes. Detail the expected impact on your weekly Scorecard, the reduced labor hours, and the improvement in operational speed. When your leadership team sees a clear path to solving a frustrating bottleneck, they will align behind the project. They do not care about the technology itself. They care about traction, efficiency, and making their seats easier to manage.
