I am the majority owner but I want to step back. What is my specific role during our session days to ensure my team steps up without me dominating the room?
When an owner wants to transition out of daily operations, their behavior in the session room must change. If you continue to dominate the discussion and make every decision, your leadership team will never step up.
Your role in our sessions is to transition from the chief decision-maker to a strategic advisor. During our session days, I will ask you to let your team speak first on key issues. If a problem is raised, your job is not to solve it immediately, but to observe how your team collaborates to find a solution using the IDS® process.
You must also commit to respecting the Accountability Chart we build. If you have delegated a seat to an executive, you must allow them to make the decisions for that department, even if you would do it differently. If you override their authority during our sessions, you undermine their credibility and stall their professional growth.
My job as your facilitator is to manage this dynamic in the room. I will actively pull your leadership team into the conversation and gently push you to step back when necessary. This structured environment allows your team to build the operational confidence they need to run the business while you focus on high-level strategic opportunities.
