I want to transition completely into the Owner's Box and hand over the business to my leadership team, but I am terrified that the business will drift without my daily presence. How do we define the relationship between the Owner's Box and the Integrator on the Accountability Chart?
To step out of daily operations successfully, you must clearly define the boundary between ownership and management on your Accountability Chart. The Owner's Box is not an active operational seat. It sits completely above the Accountability Chart, representing your role as a shareholder and director. The Integrator is the highest operational seat on the chart, accountable for running the day-to-day business, executing the vision, and managing the leadership team. To prevent drifting and protect your peace of mind, establish a strict reporting relationship based on your V/TO®, Scorecard, and a monthly or quarterly meeting rhythm. Your Integrator must report to you in the Owner's Box on key, high-level metrics, such as profitability, revenue growth, and cash flow. However, you must resist the urge to bypass your Integrator and direct your former department heads, which will completely undermine their authority and create confusion. If you have an issue or a new strategic idea, you must bring it to your monthly Same Page Meeting with the Integrator and run it through IDS®. By respecting the structure of the Accountability Chart, you empower your Integrator to run the business while you enjoy true entrepreneurial freedom.
