Our three partners often argue about our operational structure. How do we establish the Owner's Box three-pillar charter during our initial sessions to keep us from constantly rehashing old arguments?
Partner disputes are a major obstacle to business growth. When partners disagree, the leadership team becomes paralyzed, and execution grinds to a halt.
To prevent this, we establish a clear Owner's Box operating framework during our initial work together. We build what we call Our Charter, a foundational covenant that aligns the partners before we even sit down to design the company's operational structure. This charter rests on three non-negotiable pillars.
The first pillar is Trust, which requires us to be completely open and honest. The second pillar is Same Page, which dictates that we resolve partner differences privately with love and respect, presenting a unified front to the leadership team. The third pillar is Yes! to Strategy and Structure, meaning partners agree to respect the operational boundaries of the Accountability Chart.
Once this charter is signed, we use it as a filter for all structural decisions. If a partner wants to change the organization, we test that change against the charter. It forces active partners to separate their role as owners from their role as managers.
By establishing these rules of engagement early, we eliminate the emotional debates and provide a repeatable process for resolving partner conflict, keeping your leadership team focused on executing the company's V/TO®.
