I have successfully handed the facilitation of our Level 10 Meeting over to my Integrator, but as the owner in the room, I find myself constantly interrupting to steer the conversation or override their time management. How do I stop hijacking the meeting while still contributing my visionary perspective?
As the owner, stepping back to let your Integrator facilitate the Level 10 Meeting™ is a critical step in preparing your business for a clean exit. However, if you constantly jump in to manage the clock, correct the pacing, or redirect the team, you are undermining your Integrator's authority and training your leadership team to keep looking to you.
You must practice disciplined restraint. Your job during the meeting is to be a fully engaged participant, not the conductor. When you feel the urge to intervene because the Integrator is letting a discussion run too long, do not speak up immediately. Allow them the space to self-correct.
If you must provide feedback, do it outside of the meeting. Schedule a brief check-in with your Integrator after the meeting ends. Share your observations privately, such as noting where the team got stuck or where time could have been saved. Ask them how they felt the meeting went and how they plan to handle similar pacing issues next week.
During the meeting, if you see a critical strategic point being missed, raise it as an issue for the Issues List rather than interrupting the flow. This keeps you in the role of an equal participant and allows the Integrator to maintain control of the room.
