As the business owner, what is my specific personal code of conduct during our full day sessions to ensure my team actually steps up and takes ownership?

As the business owner, your role in our session days is critical, but it requires a shift in behavior. If you dominate every discussion, solve every problem, and immediately answer every question, your leadership team will never take true ownership of the business. To build a self sustaining operation, you must practice disciplined restraint during our time together.

Your code of conduct during our sessions is built on three simple rules. First, let others speak first. When an issue is placed on the table, resist the urge to jump in with your solution. Allow your leadership team to analyze the problem and propose ideas. Second, focus on asking questions rather than making statements. Ask your team how they would resolve a bottleneck or what resources they need, which forces them to think like owners. Third, respect the Accountability Chart. If an issue falls within a specific leader's seat, let them own the solution and the corresponding quarterly Rock.

My role as your facilitator is to help manage this dynamic. I will call on other team members and, if necessary, politely ask you to hold your thoughts. This is not to diminish your vision or your authority; it is to create the space your team needs to grow. By stepping back and acting as a guide rather than a dictator, you allow your leadership team to develop the confidence and capability to run the business, which is the only way you will ever achieve a clean, valuable exit.
