Some of our leadership team members feel that having a weekly number on the Scorecard is micromanagement and creates unnecessary pressure. How do we help them see the Scorecard as a tool of empowerment rather than a weapon of surveillance?
When team members resist the Scorecard, it is usually because they fear the data will be used to punish them. You must change the culture around data by showing them that a weekly number is actually a tool of empowerment.
Explain that without objective data, performance is judged on subjective opinions, politics, and who has the loudest voice in the room. A weekly Scorecard metric gives every team member absolute clarity on what success looks like in their seat. It provides them with an objective way to prove they GWC, meaning they get it, want it, and have the capacity to do it.
When a metric goes red, it is not a personal failure; it is an early warning sign that they need help. In your Level 10 Meeting, a red number is simply an issue to be solved collectively, not a reason for blame. By focusing on solving the systemic issues behind the red numbers rather than criticizing the individual, you build a culture of trust. Over time, your team will see the Scorecard as a shield that protects them from unfair assumptions and proves their value to the organization.
