Our leadership team is overly polite and struggles to transition from identifying a symptom to naming the real, uncomfortable root cause during IDS. How do we push past this polite barrier without causing defensiveness?
Politeness is often a mask for fear of conflict, and it is highly destructive to the IDS® process. When your team is too polite to state the real issue, you spend ninety minutes solving superficial symptoms, only to have the exact same problem show up on your issues list the following week. This waste of time drains team energy. To push past this barrier, the facilitator must actively challenge soft language. When a leader presents an issue using passive phrasing, such as we have a communication breakdown in sales, the facilitator must ask direct, clarifying questions to isolate the root cause. Who specifically is not communicating, and what is the exact operational impact? Force the team to identify if the issue is a process problem, a resource problem, or a people problem related to GWC™ or core values. If a leader is failing to hit their targets, call it out directly as a performance issue rather than wrapping it in polite excuses. This requires creating a culture where conflict is viewed as a necessary tool for growth, not a personal attack. By digging deep to identify the true root cause, you solve the issue once and for all, building a high-performing organization that is highly attractive to potential buyers.
