We are cascading EOS® down to our middle management tier, but our supervisors are pushed to their limits and feel that filling out Scorecards and writing Rocks is just micromanagement. How do we overcome this middle-manager resistance to the tools?

Middle-manager resistance is usually a symptom of poor communication, not bad intent. When supervisors feel that EOS tools are just extra administrative tasks, it means the leadership team has failed to show them how the tools actually make their jobs easier.

To overcome this, do not just hand them a Scorecard and demand updates. Walk them through the logic. Show them that a healthy Scorecard actually protects their time by eliminating the need for constant status update meetings. Explain that a clear list of weekly Rocks helps them say no to distractions and focus on what actually moves the needle.

You must also ensure that your leadership team is modeling the behavior. If your directors are late to their own Level 10 Meetings or fail to update their Scorecards, your managers will notice and copy that behavior.

Run training sessions where you show them how to use IDS to solve their own daily headaches. When supervisors realize that the tools empower them to fix their own problems without waiting for permission from the top, their resistance will melt away. Frame the tools as a path to autonomy, not a system of control.
