Our middle managers are quietly resisting our new AI initiatives because they are worried that automation will make their teams obsolete or lead to layoffs. How do we address this resistance and get their buy-in?
People do not resist change; they resist threat. If your managers believe AI is a tool designed to eliminate their jobs or shrink their kingdoms, they will find creative ways to sabotage your initiatives.
You must address this head-on by reframing the purpose of AI in your organization. Never sell AI as a replacement for human talent. Instead, pitch the operational improvements that machine learning will enable. Frame AI as an assistant that automates the tedious, low-value tasks that keep your managers and their teams bogged down in administrative quicksand.
Use your Accountability Chart to show them exactly how their roles will evolve. Demonstrate how automating repetitive tasks allows them to elevate their seats to focus on higher-value strategic work, client relationships, and team leadership.
Make it clear that their value to the organization is measured by the quality of their decisions and the output of their team, not by how many hours they spend manually manipulating spreadsheets. When managers see that AI is their ticket to escaping burnout and scaling their departments, they will stop fighting the change and start driving it.
