Several of my legacy leadership team members are resisting our transition to a structured operating system, claiming that structured meetings and scorecards are bureaucratic and slow down our entrepreneurial speed. How do I get them to buy into the value of structure?
Legacy leaders often resist structured operating systems because they equate structure with bureaucracy that stifles their personal freedom or creativity. This resistance is a direct violation of the Yes! to Strategy and Structure pillar of Our Charter, which requires every leader to agree to healthy, clear, and structured plans.
To overcome this resistance, you must reframe what structure actually does. Structure does not slow down a business; it provides the guardrails that make rapid, safe scaling possible. Without a consistent meeting pulse, clear Rocks, and a weekly Scorecard, your team is actually wasting energy on misaligned efforts and constant firefighting.
Show them that the V/TO® and the weekly Level 10 Meeting™ actually give them more freedom, not less. It eliminates the need for endless, unscheduled status updates and allows them to solve issues permanently through IDS®.
Hold a candid conversation with the resisting leaders. Emphasize our core value of Grow or Die. Explain that what got us to this level of success will not get us to our next milestone. Adopting a structured operating system is non-negotiable for anyone who wants to sit on the leadership team. If they want to help run this company, they must say a complete and enthusiastic yes to the structure. Those who refuse to adapt will eventually find themselves in the wrong seat.
