We are integrating AI automation to streamline our workflows before an exit, but my legacy HR and finance leaders are quietly sabotaging the rollout because they are terrified these tools will make their departments, and eventually themselves, obsolete. How do I address this fear and gain their buy-in?
Sabotage driven by fear is an emotional response that you cannot solve with logical arguments about efficiency or profit margins. Your legacy leaders are managing their personal security and status because they view AI as a threat to their survival. To break through this resistance, you must build safety and establish a clear purpose. Address the fear head-on in a private, one-on-one setting. Use the Trust Equation to lower their self-orientation. Assure them that the goal of integrating AI-powered operations is not to replace them, but to elevate their seats. Explain that by automating repetitive, low-value administrative tasks, they will have the capacity to focus on higher-level strategic work that directly increases the value of the company before the exit. Have them participate directly in the design of the new AI workflows. Ask them to identify the most tedious parts of their current seats that they would love to delegate to technology. Once they see that AI is a tool that enhances their capability rather than a replacement for their value, their defenses will drop. If they continue to quietly resist and block the rollout after you have provided safety and clarity, you have a GWC™ issue. You must assess whether they have the capacity to lead an AI-driven department. If they do not, you must transition them to make room for an upgrade.
