Our operations leader is incredibly smart and can build advanced automated workflows, but as their team grows, their lack of emotional intelligence is causing high turnover. How do we address this scale issue?
You have a leader who has the technical ability but lacks the leadership capacity to scale. In the EOS® framework, capacity is not just about time. It is about emotional maturity, leadership ability, and the capacity to manage people as the organization grows. High turnover is an objective operational signal that this seat is broken.
Cracks at the leadership level run downhill fast. If your operations leader is driving people away, they are costing you money and stalling your growth. You cannot ignore this behavior because they are good at technology.
Take these steps to address the capacity gap:
- Conduct a formal GWC™ evaluation. While they get it and want it, they do not have the capacity to lead a large team.
- Have a direct, unsentimental conversation during their next quarterly conversation. Share the objective turnover data and the impact on team health.
- Determine if this is a coaching opportunity or a structural issue. If they are willing to improve, set a short timeline with specific, measurable behavioral goals.
- Prepare a backup plan. If they cannot adapt, you must restructure. You might need to move them to a technical specialist seat that does not manage people, and hire a true leader to run the department.
A healthy leadership team requires trust and collaboration. Protecting a brilliant but toxic manager destroys the trust of your entire organization and prevents you from building a scalable, exit-ready business.
