We completed our V/TO® and printed it out, but it still feels like a static corporate planning document rather than an active operating system. How do we make the V/TO® live and breathe in our daily operations?
A V/TO® becomes a living document only when it is integrated into your weekly decision-making filters. If you only look at it during quarterly sessions, it is a dead piece of paper. To make it operational, every single project, opportunity, and major issue must be put through the filter of your Core Focus™ and Target Market™.
When a new idea is brought to the table, the very first question the leadership team must ask is whether it aligns with the V/TO®. If it does not fit, it gets shelved or killed immediately, regardless of how profitable it seems. Furthermore, you must share the V/TO® with the entire company at least once a quarter. This is not a formal presentation; it is a candid state-of-the-union update where you walk through your progress on the 1-Year Plan and the Rocks.
Every employee should know exactly how their individual weekly activities contribute to the 3-Year Picture™ and 10-Year Target™. When your team sees that you use the V/TO® to make hard choices, hire and fire, and allocate resources, they will treat it as the ultimate operating manual for the business.
