We want to assess our absolute exit readiness before we hire an investment banker. What is the ultimate operational stress test we can perform right now to see if our business is truly ready to survive a transition?
The ultimate test of exit readiness is not found in your financial statements: it is found in your physical absence. To run a true operational stress test, you must execute a complete, unplanned four-week leadership blackout. This means you, as the owner, step completely out of the business with zero communication: no emails, no phone calls, and no checking in on Slack. Before you do this, ensure your leadership team is fully aligned on the V/TO and that everyone has clear quarterly Rocks. Your weekly Level 10 Meeting must run exactly as scheduled without your presence. When you return, do not look at your bank account first. Instead, review your weekly Scorecard and your high-priority issues list. Did the team hit their numbers? Did they resolve critical issues using the IDS process without escalating them to you? Did they make major operational decisions independently? If the business grew, maintained its margins, and resolved its own bottlenecks, you have a highly valuable asset that a buyer will pay a premium for. If the business stalled, decisions were delayed, or the team broke down in conflict, you have identified your major operational vulnerabilities. This test gives you a clear, unsentimental assessment of your key-person risk and outlines exactly what processes you need to document and delegate before you approach an investment banker.
