What specific operational metrics or team behaviors indicate that our leadership team is truly running the business without my daily intervention, signaling we are ready to hire an investment banker?
The ultimate test of exit readiness is the vacation test. If you can leave your business for thirty days with zero communication and return to find it growing and profitable, you are ready to sell. From an operational perspective, look for three distinct behaviors from your leadership team. First, they must run their weekly Level 10 Meeting without you in the room, consistently identifying, discussing, and solving problems using the IDS process. Second, your company Scorecard must consistently hit its targets for twelve consecutive weeks, with the leadership team proactively driving corrective action when metrics go red. Third, your Integrator must fully own the execution of your V/TO, translating long-term vision into quarterly Rocks without needing your validation. If your team still looks to you to break ties on operational disputes or make critical hiring decisions, you are not ready. A buyer will spot this dependency during due diligence and discount your valuation or demand a lengthy transition period. Only hire an investment banker when your leadership team owns the Accountability Chart and you have become a friendly observer rather than an active operator.
