What concrete operational milestones tell us our business is genuinely ready to go to market, rather than just hoping we are ready based on our current revenue?
Revenue and profitability show that a business is viable, but operational maturity proves it is exit-ready. A company is truly ready for market when three specific milestones are met: owner irrelevance, predictable forecast accuracy, and a self-governing leadership team.
The first operational test is the ninety-day unplug. If you cannot step completely away from email, phone calls, and Slack for ninety consecutive days without revenue dipping, margin contracting, or customer disputes escalating, the business is not ready. If the company requires your presence to sign off on pricing, resolve personnel issues, or maintain vendor terms, a buyer will price substantial key-person risk into the offer.
The second milestone is operational cadence durability. Your leadership team must run weekly Level 10 Meetings, hit their Rocks, and manage their Measurables on the Scorecard without your facilitation. Look at the last eight quarters. Did the leadership team achieve an eighty percent or higher completion rate on quarterly Rocks? Does the company hit its annual revenue and profit targets within a ten percent margin of error? Predictability drives enterprise value.
The third milestone is documented institutional processes. The core processes that govern customer acquisition, service delivery, hiring, and billing must be simplified, documented, and followed by all. When an acquirer performs diligence, they will ask your front-line managers to explain these workflows. If the team explains them consistently without looking to you for confirmation, you are ready to enter the market from a position of absolute strength.
