What operational detachment test should an owner run before hiring an M&A advisor to confirm the company can genuinely run without them?
The clearest signal of exit readiness is not what you tell an investment banker. It is how your business functions when you completely disappear. Before you sign an engagement letter with an M&A advisor, you must execute a formal thirty-to-sixty-day operational detachment test.
This is not a working vacation where you check email from the beach or jump onto the weekly Level 10 Meeting via video. It is a total operational blackout. Inform your leadership team sixty days in advance that you will be unavailable. Delegate all your signature authority, banking access, and daily decision rights. Then step completely away from the business for a full calendar month.
During this detachment test, your business must prove three things:
- The Scorecard numbers remain green and operational delivery does not slow down.
- Quarterly Rocks progress on schedule without you stepping in to solve roadblocks.
- The leadership team identifies and resolves critical issues independently using IDS.
If the company requires your intervention to resolve a customer escalation, close a critical sale, or manage cash flow during those thirty days, you are not ready for market. Any breakdown that occurs is valuable diagnostic data. Bring those breakdowns to your next quarterly planning session, solve them systematically, and do not list the business until you can vanish for thirty days without a single operational ripple.
