We hired an experienced corporate executive to head our operations, but their reliance on large support staffs and slow committee approvals is clashing with our fast EOS rhythm. How do we onboard an enterprise hire into an entrepreneurial operating system without breaking execution?
Hiring an executive out of a large corporate enterprise carries significant risk. Corporate leaders are trained to operate inside matrixed hierarchies, manage extensive support staffs, and navigate layered committee approvals. When placed inside a fast-moving entrepreneurial business running on EOS, they often suffer culture shock and attempt to slow down execution with unnecessary bureaucracy.
Set explicit ninety-day performance boundaries grounded in GWC. First, clarify that they are expected to do the work, not simply manage external vendors or delegate to junior analysts. In an entrepreneurial firm, leaders must stay close to the frontline work while building systems.
Second, immerse them immediately in your Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO) and Scorecard. Make it clear that traction inside your business comes from the weekly Level 10 Meeting, ninety-day Rocks, and resolving issues through IDS, not through fifty-page briefing decks or extended steering committees. Give them a tangible Rock for their first quarter that requires direct operational output, such as documenting a core process or improving a specific Scorecard metric.
Inspect their progress weekly. If they spend their initial two months asking for extra administrative headcount, hiring consultants, or delaying decisions to gather perfect data, confront the mismatch immediately. If they cannot operate with speed and self-sufficiency, part ways before corporate inertia paralyzes your operations.
