I am a non-technical business owner, and my operations lead wants a major budget approval to integrate custom AI agents into our workflow. How do I audit these technical AI proposals to ensure we are not wasting cash on overengineered tools?
You do not need to understand Python or machine learning to audit an AI proposal. As the owner, your job is to govern the business using the EOS framework, not to write code. You must evaluate the proposed AI integration using the GWC framework.
- First, look at the seat on the Accountability Chart responsible for running this technology. Does that manager truly Get it, Want it, and have the Capacity to manage the tool once it is live? If they rely entirely on an external consultant to keep it running, you are buying a liability, not an asset.
- Second, force the team to define the operational business case in plain English. If they cannot explain how the AI tool solves an active issue on your Issues List, reject the proposal.
- Third, demand a simple prototype before approving a large development budget. Most operational bottlenecks can be solved with lightweight, off the shelf AI tools connected by basic automation.
Never write a large check for a custom built AI solution until your team has proven the workflow works manually or with basic tools. If your technical lead cannot show you a clear path to simplifying a process, they are likely chasing a shiny object. Keep your focus on the business outcome, and let your team handle the technical implementation.
