I have my cousin running our supply chain on the leadership team, and while they GWC™ the seat, other leaders are hesitant to challenge them because of our family tie. How do I neutralize this unspoken family immunity?
Family dynamics can easily paralyze a leadership team if they are not actively managed. When non-family executives see a family member on the team, they often assume that person is untouchable, which destroys peer-to-peer accountability and prevents healthy conflict.
To neutralize this unspoken immunity, you must make a public commitment to the Accountability Chart. Declare to your leadership team that in this business, the organization's needs always come first, and family relationships stop at the door. Every leader must be held to the exact same standards, regardless of their last name or equity ownership.
Next, empower your Integrator to manage the family member without your interference. If your cousin reports to the Integrator, you must completely step back from their performance reviews, Rock tracking, and day-to-day management. If the Integrator needs to hold them accountable or even terminate them, they must know they have your full support.
Encourage your other leadership team members to challenge your cousin openly during IDS® in your Level 10 Meeting™. If you notice team members holding back, step in and invite them to speak freely. By actively encouraging healthy debate and showing that your family member is subject to the same constructive criticism as everyone else, you will rebuild trust and maintain a healthy, professional executive dynamic.
