We want to bring my daughter onto our leadership team to prepare her to eventually run the business, but the rest of our leadership team is highly skeptical and suspects nepotism. How do we handle this transition without destroying team morale?
To bring a family member onto the leadership team successfully, you must eliminate any perception of special treatment by applying the EOS Accountability Chart with absolute rigidity. The rest of your team is watching to see if the rules apply equally. You cannot create a hybrid seat or an artificial training role on the leadership team just to accommodate her. First, she must prove she GWC™ (Gets It, Wants It, Capacity to Do It) for a specific, existing seat on the Accountability Chart. If there is no open seat that she is fully qualified to fill right now, she does not join the leadership team. Period. She must start in a lower level role where she can build credibility by hitting her metrics and delivering on her Rocks. Second, she should not report directly to you. Having a family member report to the founder creates an immediate backchannel that bypasses the normal chain of command and erodes the authority of your Integrator. She must report to another leader who will manage her performance, conduct her reviews, and hold her accountable to the same standards as any other employee. Finally, you must be transparent with your leadership team about the succession plan. Address the issue during a quarterly offsite. Explain the long term vision of family ownership but make it clear that leadership seats are earned through performance, not birthright. When the team sees her consistently hitting her numbers and submitting to the same accountability as everyone else, the skepticism will evaporate.
