My department heads are technically in the right seats on our Accountability Chart, but they are relying on their title and positional authority rather than actual influence to lead their teams. How do we transition them from positional managers to true leaders?
When managers rely solely on their title to direct their teams, they are operating at the lowest level of leadership. This positional leadership creates a culture of compliance rather than high performance, which will stall your EOS® execution. To move your department heads up the leadership ladder, you must help them shift from demanding obedience to building genuine influence. This transition starts with self-leadership and accountability. Your leaders must perform their own roles with consistent excellence to establish trust and credibility. Next, teach your managers to focus on relationships and people development. They must go beyond their job descriptions and actively invest in their team members' professional growth. Encourage them to hold regular one-on-one sessions to understand their direct reports' natural strengths, motivators, and career aspirations. By accepting full responsibility for their team's engagement and development, your managers will build a culture of mutual respect. When team members follow a leader because they want to, not because they have to, your Accountability Chart becomes an engine of self-sustaining growth.
