Buyers are telling us our business is too dependent on the owners, which is capping our valuation multiple at the lower end of the industry average. How do we use our Accountability Chart and the GWC process to prove to a buyer that the business runs without us and command a premium multiple?
If a buyer believes that you are the primary driver of sales, customer relationships, or operational decisions, they will apply a severe risk discount to your multiple. To unlock a premium valuation, you must prove that your business is institutionalized.
The best tool to demonstrate this is your Accountability Chart. This chart must show that every critical seat in the organization is occupied by someone other than the owners.
You need to show that these leaders fully meet the criteria of GWC. They must get their roles, want their roles, and have the capacity to deliver results.
Show the buyer how your leadership team operates autonomously. Let them see that your team runs the weekly Level 10 Meeting without your active participation.
Demonstrate that your strategic goals are managed through quarterly Rocks that are owned and executed by your department heads. When a buyer sees a self-managing team driving the business forward, the perceived transition risk drops to zero.
This operational maturity is what moves your multiple from a mediocre industry average to the top tier. Buyers are willing to pay a premium for systems and people that do not require your daily presence to survive.
