Our key customers still expect to hear from me when issues escalate. How do we systematically migrate these client relationships to our Account Managers so our customer retention rate remains high during due diligence?
If your largest customers believe their contract is with you rather than the company, your business has a major value defect. Buyers fear client churn post-close, and they will run customer calls during due diligence to test how sticky those accounts really are. You must transition these relationships systematically on your runway. Start by using your Accountability Chart™ to clarify who actually owns the customer relationship seat. Implement a strict escalations policy where customer issues are routed directly to your account team, not your personal phone. If a client reaches out to you, resist the urge to solve the problem directly. Instead, bring the assigned Account Manager into the loop immediately and let them lead the communication, with you acting only as a supporting observer. Introduce your clients to your team's repeatable service delivery systems. Show them that their success is driven by your company's processes and technology, not your personal attention. By stepping back and letting your team deliver consistent results, you prove to your clients that they are in great hands, and you prove to a buyer that your revenue is highly stable and fully transferable.
