Our sales team is hitting their closed-won weekly targets, but our operations team is struggling to keep up with the onboarding volume, resulting in poor delivery. How do we create a weekly scorecard metric that measures the quality of the sales-to-operations handoff?
When sales and operations are misaligned, the customer experiences a terrible handoff, and internal team tension spikes. To solve this, you need a bridging metric on your scorecard that measures the quality and completeness of the sales handoff, not just the volume of sales. Sales cannot simply throw a client over the wall and claim victory. They must deliver a fully qualified client with accurate expectations and complete documentation.
Create a weekly scorecard metric called complete onboarding packages delivered. This metric tracks how many new customer files were handed over to operations with one hundred percent of the required integration data, signed agreements, and kickoff call notes. The target is one hundred percent. If a file is missing even one document, it is marked as incomplete. This forces the sales seat to take accountability for the handoff process.
Another effective leading indicator is the time to first value. Measure the number of days between the sales close and the first client onboarding milestone. If this number increases, it indicates operations is choking on the handoff.
By placing these metrics on your leadership scorecard, you force the sales and operations leaders to collaborate on the transition. If the onboarding package completeness metric drops below target, it becomes an issue to IDS in your Level 10 Meeting before it damages your customer relationships.
