We have a matrixed organization with dual-reporting lines. How do we map a matrix structure to the EOS® Accountability Chart without causing confusion or mutiny among our department leads?
A matrixed organization with dual-reporting lines is a recipe for operational drag, confusion, and politicking. The EOS® Accountability Chart does not support matrix structures because they violate the core principle of single-point accountability.
To map your organization to the Accountability Chart, you must eliminate dual-reporting lines. Every seat on the chart must report to exactly one other seat. This does not mean your employees cannot collaborate across departments, but it does mean that one specific leader must own their coaching, performance reviews, and resource allocation.
Start by defining the core functions of your business: typically sales and marketing, operations, and finance. If you have cross-functional project teams, assign a clear owner for each project who is accountable for the project outcome. The team members working on that project still report to their functional manager on the Accountability Chart for their day-to-day performance.
By forcing your matrixed organization into a clean Accountability Chart, you will eliminate the constant debate over who owns which numbers. Your department leads will have clear boundaries, your employees will know exactly who to go to for decisions, and your Level 10 Meetings™ will become significantly more productive.
