My leadership team complains that I constantly introduce new, half-baked strategic ideas every Monday, which derails their quarterly Rocks and creates whiplash across the organization. How do I balance my natural visionary creativity with the operational stability my leadership team needs to execute?
As a Visionary, your brain is a non-stop idea generator. While this creativity built the business, constantly dumping new ideas on your leadership team creates operational whiplash and destroys executive focus. Your team needs stability to execute their quarterly Rocks and maintain their weekly Level 10 Meeting cadence. To solve this, you must implement a strict filter for your ideas. Create an ideas track, often called a parking lot or a long-term issues list on your V/TO. When you have a new idea, do not immediately share it with your team. Instead, write it down and save it for your next quarterly planning session. This gives your ideas time to cure and prevents you from distracting your team mid-quarter. During your quarterly offsites, you can run your new ideas through the IDS process with your leadership team to see if they actually align with your long-term vision. This discipline protects your team's energy and allows them to focus on execution. If an idea is truly urgent, bring it to your Integrator first in your same page meetings, rather than sharing it with the entire team. Respecting this operational boundary is crucial to maintaining team trust and driving consistent performance.
